How fast is the internet speed?
The wifi connection is via wifi through the EE network and guests have unlimited data.
Due to our remote location Vixen Tor Farm is not on fibre (and is thus not ultra fast), however the the speed is more than good enough to stream online content and undertake video calls etc.
Can I stay for less than three nights?
We have a minimum booking period of three-nights but guests can stay just one or two nights if they cannot commit to all three. Please note that during peak seasons, the minimum booking length is five-nights.
What’s the maximum length of time I can stay for?
There is no long-stop as such, please just give us your preferred dates at the time of enquiry and we will do our best to accommodate you.
How many people can stay at Vixen Tor Farm?
We can host up to five people in the Barns.
Who else will be in the vicinity?
The owner (James) lives in the house behind the barns, and may pop down to say hello during your stay. There is a gate separating the two properties. You may spot our gardener, woodsman or a local farmer in the vicinity but it is more than likely that you will not see anyone else during your stay and enjoy complete peace and quiet.
Can I bring my dog?
Unfortunately pets are not permitted at Vixen Tor Farm, even if your dog is small/fluffy/friendly/old/cute etc etc. If you have visitors during your stay, please ask them not to bring their dog too.
Will a front wheel drive make it down your track?
Absolutely! The majority of guests and other people coming up to Vixen Tor Farm use their normal car. As the track is a little bumpy in places, you just need to take it slow and steady. The track is not really suitable for very low slung vehicles (supercars!) or vans with a long wheel base/ high panels due to manoeuvrability.
What are the checking-in and checking-out times?
Check-in is any time from 3.00 pm and check-out is by 10.00 am. We have a self check-in process, so you can be completely independent and turn-up however late you wish. We provide the key safe code and detailed directions a few days before you arrive.
Our ethos at Vixen Tor Farm is to minimise the environmental impact of running a Dartmoor holiday let; measures to minimise carbon footprint and operate in a sustainable way are detailed on our eco-holiday page. We ask that guests help with this mission during their stay, with ideas provided in the Holiday Barn Handbook. The team also welcome ideas that guests may have to improve our sustainability further – please share any with us.
Is Vixen Tor Farm suitable for children?
When booking with young children, please be aware of the following:
Barns: The stairs to both mezzanine levels are steep; they have handrails but no uprights on one side. Small children require supervision when using them.
Furthermore, the mezzanine levels are railed across the front, but could be climbed over as the rails are not full height. Please see photos on our accommodation page.
Grounds: There are rivulets running down the side of the garden – c.50 feet from the front door of the Barns. The River Walkham is c.30 minute walk from the Barns, and the quarry pond is c.20 minutes walk away. Other streams and rivulets may be found as the property is around 50 acres in size.
Is there a telly?
There is no TV signal at Vixen Tor Farm. We do have a flatscreen with a DVD player and a massive selection of films to choose from, and you can of course stream your favourite channels over wifi on your laptop/tablet etc.
What do you provide in the Barns?
The barns are fully equipped for you to have a comfortable stay; our full list of amenities are detailed here. If we have overlooked anything, then please get in touch with us during your stay. For example, telling us there was no tea-towel provided after you leave means we can’t put it right.
Do you charge extra for firewood?
We provide eco-firelighters, kindling and an unlimited supply of firewood during your stay with us, at no extra charge. These can be used in our log-burner and the external fire pit.
What are the rules around open fires?
You may only use the fire pit or BBQ if weather conditions allow – e.g. their use during and following periods of dry weather are not permitted by Dartmoor National Park. This is a dynamic situation so please check DNP’s guidance before lighting any external fires.
Are guests allowed to climb / walk around on Vixen Tor itself?
The tor is owned by someone else, is private property, and access is not permitted to members of the public, including those staying at Vixen Tor Farm. Please do not trespass.
