In layman’s terms, Rivendell, Middle Earth
The property sits tucked under the majestic Vixen Tor, has five miles of uninterrupted views of Dartmoor and 50 acres of privately owned bluebell and ancient oak woodland and riverbank.
Tucked away in the folds of west Dartmoor, Vixen Tor Farm is the perfect bolt hole, allowing guests to ‘get away from it all’, and be immersed in complete peace and quiet. Located underneath the rocky outcrop of Vixen Tor and above an ancient oak forest, this spectacular spot has been inhabited for over 3,500 years with the original house dating back to a Bronze Age farmstead.
Surrounded by trees and moorland on the western boundary of Dartmoor, our vast, mystical landscape is perfect for either a calming or active break. With access to cascading rivers, wild flower meadows, boulder strewn bluebell groves and the open moor (literally out of the door), you will have endless opportunities to explore and connect with nature. The air that comes off the Atlantic here is so pure that rare mosses and lichens thrive.
Our location is a perfect spot for star gazing, with clear, bright stars displayed across one of the few dark skies left in the United Kingdom. Dartmoor is also one of England’s last unspoiled wilderness areas – a great place to walk, climb, ride and cycle. Why not also explore our native woodlands, many of which are in fact rainforests, as explained in this article from The Woodland Trust.
Close to the steep-sided Walkham Valley into which countless streams tumble, Vixen Tor Farm also provides access to private wild swimming spots and a quarry pond bedecked with lily-pads can be discovered a short walk away, close to our historic quarryman’s hut. The holiday let, a striking barn conversion, further benefits from having pure spring-fed water, filtered through the granite; mineral water literally on tap!
Guests leave feeling cleansed, renewed and energised.
