Enjoy the best of the West Country
We realise that self-catering holidays are often quite a hassle – unfamiliar kitchens, equipment and shops make for stress… which was not the plan! We hope that this page will help the family cooks who stay at Vixen Tor Farm know the options for pre-ordering food and shopping locally for quality produce.
Tavistock is known for being a ‘foody’ town and benefits from a wonderful selection of independent food shops, many of which are award winning and/or are family owned and go back generations. We’d love guests to support our local independent shops where possible (rather than defaulting to supermarkets..) and as well as being able to browse in them, many shops also offer a ‘click and collect’ or delivery service. Please call ahead or check websites for details and opening times.
Book a local food box or do an online shop
You can order a food box or do an online shop from one or more of our local suppliers to give your self catering a head start, and if you like the produce, why not order another delivery to take home with you when you leave! Suggestions include:
Eversfield (wild farm shop and deli selling 100% organic produce)
Find an emporium of the finest organic produce sourced from across the South West and beyond. Our friendly staff will be happy to help you with your organic foodie needs. We have a fresh coffee bar so you can enjoy a hot drink or bring you own cup to take away! Also, have a perusal of our deli menu for organic wine, cheese and charcuterie platters, olives, nibbles and more!
Organic meat boxes (grass fed beef, lamb, pork, chicken and wild game), fish boxes and organic fruit and vegetable boxes are available, or select the exact items you want from their online shop. Eversfield offer a free local delivery to Vixen Tor every Thursday with a minimum spend of £40.00. For shopping required on other days, or for orders less than £40.00, guests can place an online order and use Eversfields’ Click & Collect service from their shop in Tavistock town centre (2 West Street).
Roots & Vines (high quality local produce and specialist foods)
Select your fruit, veg and other groceries from a wonderful selection of locally sourced, fresh produce – Roots & Vines also stock delicious wines and craft beers… Place your order through their online shop, pay online and either do a Click and Collect from their shop in Tavistock (2 Russell Street), or have it delivered for a small extra charge. In terms of delivery, please note that orders need to be placed two days ahead of your arrival to fulfill the order (i.e. if an order is needed for a Friday it needs to be placed by Wednesday AM).
Country Cheeses (legendary cheese shop with huge selection)
Country Cheeses sells in the region of a hundred different cheeses, all British and mostly from the Westcountry. We deal with the cream of cheesemakers who are driven to produce the best cheeses you could find anywhere, and who are also prepared to produce cheeses especially for us.
As well as buying from the Country Cheeses shop in Tavistock (Market Road), you can buy remotely via phone or email – select from one of three pre-assembled cheese boards, or choose your own cheeses from their various categories (Hard Cows Milk Cheese, Blue Cheese, Hard Goat Sheep and Buffalo Cheese, Soft Cheese and Washed Rind Cheese).
Cornish Food Box Company (don’t worry about the name – we are only four miles from the “border”)
Order a range of local food produce from The Cornish Food Box Company – they offer the typical veg, fruit and meat boxes but also provide delicious ‘ready meal’ boxes.
Visit Tavistock’s award-winning farmers’ market
Tavistock Farmers’ Market takes place on the 2nd, 4th and 5th Saturday of each month from 9.00am until 1.30pm. It’s a real treasure trove of fresh, local food, drink and plants direct from the producer, and much of it is organic. Everything on sale is produced within the local area, and stallholders are the farmers, growers or producers themselves. All products sold have been grown, reared, caught, brewed, pickled, baked, smoked or processed by the stallholders. People are encouraged to browse, taste and ask questions.
Local Eateries in and around Tavistock
There is a range of excellent pubs and restaurants in the area, from country foodie pubs through to smart dining. Some are a good walk from Vixen Tor Farm, or you can order a taxi to drive you back to the Barns afterwards. Details of recommended eateries (and directions) can be found here.
